CLEVELAND -- Prior to Friday's game, the Mariners released a medical update announcing that ace Felix Hernandez and outfielder Mitch Haniger will both miss three to four weeks after undergoing testing in Seattle with Mariners team medical director Dr. Ed Khalfayan on Friday morning.
Hernandez -- who left in the third inning of his last start on Tuesday in Detroit -- was diagnosed with bursitis in his right shoulder. Haniger also left in Tuesday's game, as the rookie was experiencing discomfort in his right oblique after a third inning at-bat. The outfielder was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain of his right oblique muscle. Both players were placed on the 10-day disabled list on Wednesday.
"It hurts," Mariners manager Scott Servais said after Friday's 3-1 win over the Indians. "But it'll give an opportunity for other guys and it'll create chances for them to step up and we have guys that are taking advantage of it. We'll get them back and at some point we'll be at full strength."
Hernandez dealt with bursitis while with Triple-A Tacoma in 2005 and missed just under a month before he returned to make his Major League debut later that season. The right-hander is 2-2 with a 4.73 ERA in five starts this season. He gave up four runs on six hits in his short outing on Wednesday.
Haniger was having a very productive rookie season, hitting .338 with four homers and 16 RBIs to go along with a 1.042 OPS.
"A lot of teams have to deal with adversity and injuries, we are not the only one," Servais said. "But it hurts. No doubt."
