SEATTLE -- Hisashi Iwakuma, who's been on the disabled list since May 7, threw a 25-pitch bullpen session before Friday's game against the Angels. The results weren't what he wanted.
"Overall, it actually wasn't a very good day," Iwakuma said through interpreter Antony Suzuki. "I had to fight through my mechanics and my timing with my upper body syncing with my lower body. I couldn't find that, so it wasn't very good."
Iwakuma said Thursday that the tentative plan was to complete a simulated game early next week. But that's in question after Friday's bullpen session.
"I don't make the call, but I think it's going to pushed back a little bit according to today's bullpen," Iwakuma said.
It's been a laboring rehabilitation process for the 36-year-old starting pitcher. He was shut down from throwing in early July on the coattails of a lackluster Minor League rehab start in Triple-A Tacoma on June 19, when he allowed four runs on four hits in two innings. He was pulled after throwing just 49 pitches after being slated to toss 70-75 pitches.
Iwakuma compiled an 0-2 record and a 4.35 ERA in six starts this season before landing on the disabled list.
Haniger close to rehab assignment
Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger worked out again on the field Friday, according to Mariners manager Scott Servais, and could go out on a rehabilitation assignment this weekend.
"He's feeling better," Servais said. "He just needs to get out and play, see where he's at."
Haniger's been out with a facial laceration since July 30 after being hit in the face by Jacob deGrom's fastball in a 3-2 win over the Mets on July 29.
