SEATTLE -- Mariners shortstop Ketel Marte twisted his right ankle while sliding into third base on an attempted triple in the third inning of Friday night's 7-3 series-opening loss to the Astros and was replaced the following inning by Shawn O'Malley. The Mariners described it as a mild sprain and listed Marte as day to day.
Marte came up limping after hitting the bag awkwardly while attempting to beat the throw from center fielder Carlos Gómez to third baseman Luis Valbuena. Marte initially was ruled safe on the play, but that call was overturned after a review.
"We come in, day game tomorrow, so we'll see how he is," said manager Scott Servais. "There's not a lot of swelling and all those other good things you want to hear on something like that. Hopefully it's just day to day and he'll just miss a day or two."

The 22-year-old infielder is hitting .273 with one home run and 19 RBIs in his first full season in the Majors. He said the ankle was feeling better after receiving treatment following the game and hopes to play on Saturday.
Marte was the third out of the inning. He attempted to take the field for the top of the fourth, but second baseman Robinson Canó signaled to the bench as the youngster struggled during warmups and O'Malley was sent in to take his place.
"I feel better now, but when that happened, that hurt and I was trying to continue in the game," Marte said. "But Robbie told me, if I can't play I'm going to hurt the team. It's good to take me out, get some treatment and tomorrow I'll be good."
Both Servais and Marte said he needed to work on his sliding technique after having several issues going into bases this year. He spent 15 days on the disabled list from May 22-June 5 with a sprained left thumb when he slid headfirst into second base and jammed his hand.
"We've seen a few of those from him," Servais said. "We can't take anything for granted, but he's got to get a little cleaner on how he slides because he's had a couple issues with that this year."
O'Malley provided a nice spark off the bench with a two-run double in his first at-bat and also threw a runner out at home on an infield grounder in the fifth.

"He's done a really nice job for us," Servais said. "He comes in and doesn't get overwhelmed by the situation. He just stays with his game and doesn't try to do too much. He puts a bat on the ball and good things usually happen there. He did a decent job at shortstop and will probably be in there tomorrow for us. We need him to step up here for a few days until we get Marte back in there."
O'Malley said he'll show up ready to do whatever is needed.

"Unfortunately I came in for not the right reason, but that's part of my job, just to always be ready," he said. "You never know when you're going to be needed. Unfortunately we didn't win, but hopefully I can get out there and help get the fire going and start winning some more games."
