SEATTLE -- Another gray sky in Seattle, another Mariner on the disabled list.
That was the reaction by Seattle manager Scott Servais on Tuesday after a magnetic-resonance imaging exam on second baseman Robinson Cano's right quadriceps muscle revealed a mild strain. Cano missed all four games in the recent weekend road series in Toronto and sat out Monday's win over the A's at Safeco Field.
Now, Cano will miss at least another week with a 10-day DL stint retroactive to May 13. Outfielder Boog Powell, the club's No. 23 prospect per MLBPipeline.com, was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to take Cano's roster spot, and Servais said Taylor Motter will likely get most of the time at second in Cano's absence.
"It's nothing that we think is going to take anything longer than an extra five or six days, and he should be good to go," Servais said. "Instead of waiting day to day to day, we're kind of at the point now where we're trying to cut it off and get him back and be close to 100 percent when he comes back, and then go from there."

Cano, 34, is hitting .296/.362/.533 with eight home runs, 28 RBIs and 21 runs in 34 games. In his last 21 games, he hit .349 with seven homers, five doubles, 20 RBIs and a 1.073 OPS.
"It's disappointing," said Servais, who is also currently without four of the five starters he expected to be in his Opening Day rotation, plus emerging outfielder Mitch Haniger, among others. "I know he's disappointed as well. He was going so good with the bat. … Things happen. A lot of things have happened this year on the injury front, and this is another one."
This is the first time Cano has been on the disabled list since June 27-Aug. 8, 2006, with a strained left hamstring while with the Yankees. Since making his Major League debut in May of 2005, he has appeared in 1,882 games, the most of any player in the Majors in that span.
"I don't know if there's any rationalization behind it," Servais said of all the injuries. "We've gotten bit by the bug.
"Like I've said all along, nobody's going to feel sorry for us. We play the games. They're not slowing down, or stopping the schedule. We'll go out there, and continue to compete. … Eventually, we will all become healthy again, and we'll become whole, and I'll be interested to see what our team looks like at that point."
Paxton to throw Thursday: Starter James Paxton, on the DL with a left forearm strain, is slated to throw a bullpen session Thursday. Servais said the plan is for Paxton to work up to one Minor League rehab start, and then possibly come back at the end of next week's road trip through Washington, Boston and Colorado, or back home against the Rockies on May 31.
"I'm very excited," Paxton said. "I can't wait to get back out there."
Gaviglio starting Thursday: The Mariners announced that right-hander Sam Gaviglio will start Thursday's game against the White Sox. Gaviglio has made one relief appearance since being called up from Triple-A Tacoma, pitching two innings against Toronto and giving up one run in his Major League debut last Thursday.
Update on Weber: The Mariners announced that right-hander Ryan Weber was diagnosed with a stretch of the musculocutaneous nerve of his right arm. There is no current timetable for his return. Weber was examined by Mariners medical director E. Edward Khalfayan on Monday.
