Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced today that the club has recalled right-handed pitcher Evan Scribner from his rehab assignment and activated him from the 60-day disabled list. To make room on the Mariners Major League 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Nathan Karns has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Scribner (#58) will be in uniform and available for tomorrow night's (7:10 pm PT) game vs. the Los Angeles Angels.
Scribner, 31, made 8 rehab appearances (2 starts) with the AZL Mariners, advanced A Bakersfield, AA Jackson and AAA Tacoma, and posted a combined record of 0-1 with a 6.48 ERA (6 ER, 8.1 IP) with 14 strikeouts and 3 walks. He was originally placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 3 (retroactive to March 25) with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle and transferred to the 60-day disabled list on May 29. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-hander will be making his Mariners debut with his first appearance.
In 2015, Scribner was 2-2 with a 4.35 ERA in a career-high 54 appearances with Oakland. He struck out 64 hitters in 60.0 innings pitched while walking just 4 (out of 238 batters faced). His 16-to-1 strikeout ratio last season led all Major League relievers, as did his 0.60 walks per 9.0 innings pitched. Scribner missed the month of September with a strained right latissimus dorsi muscle. In parts of 5 Major League seasons with San Diego (2011) and Oakland (2012-15), Scribner has compiled a career record of 5-2 with a 4.21 ERA (69 ER, 147.2 IP) with 134 strikeouts and 27 walks in 125 career games.
Karns, 28, was originally placed on the 15-day disabled list with a low back strain on July 30. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound right-hander was 6-2 with a 5.15 ERA (54 ER, 94.1 IP) with 101 strikeouts and 45 walks in 22 games (15 starts) with the Mariners this season. He was 6-2 with a 4.56 ERA (41 ER, 81.0 IP) in 15 starts. After moving to the bullpen, Karns recorded 1 save while posting an 8.78 ERA (13 ER, 13.1 IP) with 17 strikeouts and 7 walks in 7 appearances.
