SEATTLE -- Despite his strong start to the season, Robinson Cano of the Mariners is running third in 2016 Esurance MLB All-Star Ballot voting for the starting second base spot for next month's 87th All-Star Game presented by MasterCard, as the second round of results were released Tuesday.
Cano saw his string of five straight starting All-Star berths snapped last year when he had a poor first half. But this year, Cano has hit 16 home runs and 48 RBIs with a slash line of .284/.343/.560 in 57 games going into Tuesday's play.
Houston second baseman Jose Altuve is the leader in the early fan voting and he's also having an outstanding start, batting .336/.411/.557 with 10 home runs, 34 RBIs and 17 stolen basses. But Omar Infante of the Royals is currently second in voting despite hitting just .239/.279/.321 with no homers and 11 RBIs in 39 games.

Altuve has garnered 893,332 votes, Infante 622,683 and Cano 536,550.
Nelson Cruz is the only other Mariner among the top five vote-getters at any position. Cruz is fifth at designated hitter, a spot he won last year for his fourth All-Star appearance.

Boston's David Ortiz is currently the runaway leader in the DH group with 1,460,339 votes, well ahead of Kendrys Morales of the Royals at 650,077. Toronto's Edwin Encarnacion, Detroit's Victor Martinez and Cruz are running 3-4-5, with Cruz at 305,573 votes.
Ortiz is having an outstanding season in his final year with 16 homers, 54 RBIs and a .340/.424/.732 line. But Cruz ranks second among all designated hitters in homers with 13 and is third in RBIs (40), batting average (.288), OBP (.379) and slugging percentage (.524).
A case could also be made for better support for Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager, who is not in the top five at his position despite a strong .288/.358/.516 line with 10 homers and 39 RBIs after a slow start.
Fans can cast their votes for starters at MLB.com and all 30 club sites -- on their computers, tablets and smartphones -- exclusively online using the 2016 Esurance MLB All-Star Game Ballot until Thursday, June 30, at 8:59 p.m. PT. The second round of the National League voting will be announced Wednesday by Major League Baseball.
