SEATTLE -- The Mariners made a lot of noise with their bats in a 16-4 rout of the Padres in the getaway game of this short two-game series on Tuesday.
They also made a bit of history.
The resurgent Seattle offense carved out another paragraph in team annals by equaling the record for single-game offensive output at Safeco Field. They scored 16 runs at their home ballpark for the fourth time since its opening in 1999, having also accomplished the feat twice in the 116-win season of 2001 (Aug. 22 vs. Detroit, Oct. 4 vs. Texas) and once in 2002 (April 22 vs. the Angels).
It was the 18th time in club history that the Mariners scored 16 or more runs in a game, and the first since May 30, 2012, when they beat the Rangers, 21-8, in Texas.
"Scoring runs is definitely fun," said third baseman Kyle Seager, who went 3-for-4 with a three-run home run and four RBIs. "Winning's even more fun."

The Mariners scored 13 of those 16 runs with two outs on Tuesday, including the first 10 runs of the day. The 13 two-out runs were the second-most in team history to the 14 the team scored on June 15, 1991, vs. Detroit.
"It's just guys not giving away at-bats and understanding how important every out is," said outfielder Seth Smith, who homered twice on Tuesday and drove in four runs. "You can do a lot of damage and score a lot of runs with two outs."
The Mariners did it with the long ball, too. They hit a season-high five home runs on Tuesday afternoon.
"It's fun to watch," Mariners manager Scott Servais said. "We know it's not going to be there every day. That's why you continue to hear me talk about the quality at-bats, grinding at-bats. Because the home runs are not going to be there every day. But I certainly enjoy them when they are."
