SEATTLE -- Moments after the Mariners’ 3-2, 10-inning victory over the Tigers on Sunday afternoon, veteran utility man Kristopher Negrón was exchanging hugs and handshakes from teammates after being told he was traded.

But the deal didn’t become official until late Sunday night when the Dodgers announced they’d acquired Negron for Minor League infielder Daniel Castro, who will report to Triple-A Tacoma for the Mariners.

Negron can play anywhere in the infield or outfield and has been filling in well in right field the past week with Domingo Santana limited by a strained right elbow, making several outstanding defensive plays, including a diving catch to rob Brandon Dixon leading off the second inning on Sunday.

But at 33, Negron’s future is limited, and the Mariners are looking to add prospects to their system. Negron’s outfield time figured to be limited as well, with Keon Broxton acquired off waivers on Saturday and expected to join the club on Tuesday when it opens its next series in Texas. Negron’s departure puts the Mariners’ 40-man roster at 39, opening a spot for Broxton.

The Mariners also have rookie Dylan Moore and Austin Nola as utility players, while veteran Tim Beckham and the recently promoted Ryan Court are also capable of playing multiple positions.

Castro, a 26-year-old from Mexico, has four years of team control remaining after spending limited time in the Majors with the Braves and Rockies in 2015-16 and ’18. He’s posted a slash line of .210/.240/.265 with three homers and 18 RBIs in 286 MLB plate appearances while playing second, third and shortstop.

Castro currently is on a Minor League injury rehab stint with the Dodgers’ Arizona Rookie League club after recovering from a broken bone in his left hand. He had previously hit .241/.304/.295 with one homer and 11 RBIs in 45 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Negron was acquired by Seattle in a cash deal from the D-backs last Aug. 30 and spent this season in Triple-A until being called up on July 16. He put up a .217/.280/.217 line with one RBI in 23 at-bats with Seattle after batting .310 with 12 homers and 61 RBIs in 82 games for Tacoma.

He gives the Dodgers some versatility and depth in the wake of Enrique Hernandez landing on the injured list.
