ST. PETERSBURG -- Mark Trumbo was not in Friday's lineup against the Rays and will likely be placed on the 10-day disabled list, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said.
Trumbo -- who was sidelined earlier this week in Chicago -- received a cortisone injection in his right knee and would be unavailable for at least a few more days. He underwent an MRI on Friday morning, which showed some arthritis and runner's knee (chondromalacia), but no structural damage.
"Found out what we were hoping, so it's kind of good," Showalter said of the MRI. "I think it relieves a lot of the anxiety he might have structurally. That's in good shape. He's going to get whatever fluid's there drained off and I think a cortisone injection. So is [reliever] Darren [O'Day], so that will be three days [down] on both of them.
"I think we're leaning toward a DL for Mark after the game and kind of wait and see whether we're going to need to get a pitcher or position player here."
Trumbo, who started the season on the DL with a hamstring injury, had been one of the Orioles' better hitters since his return in Anaheim earlier this month. In 20 games, he's hit .309 with two homers and eight RBIs.
"There will be pain associated for the rest of my playing days. That's just something I thought [was the case]. Years of wear and tear," Trumbo said. "I think the slide into second the other day kind of jarred something and caused some inflammation. But the good news is the meniscus and stuff look good."
In a perfect world, the Orioles would like to add a left-handed bat to balance their lineup, but Showalter acknowledged that may not be the case. There's also a chance they make more than one roster move after the game.
