MIAMI -- The Marlins reinstated left-handed reliever Mike Dunn from the disabled list on Tuesday afternoon, designating Edwin Jackson for assignment to make room on the roster.
Dunn, who made three rehab appearances at Class A Advanced Jupiter last week, had been on the DL all season with a left forearm strain. It marked the first DL stint of the 31-year-old veteran's career.
The Marlins add a valuable lefty and power arm to a bullpen that had been the only team in the Majors without a southpaw. Manager Don Mattingly said he plans to use Dunn in late innings and against left-handers. With no left-handed relief option Monday, Pirates left-handed-hitting outfielder Gregory Polanco hit a grand slam in the sixth inning off right-hander Jose Urena.
"Early on, I'm gonna try to be careful with him," Mattingly said of Dunn. "We'll try to use him where we would use him and not really try to give him a meaningless inning. We're gonna try to use him situationally."
Dunn's body will have to adjust to the increased workload, something he's looking forward to.
"It's definitely a different process I've never been through before, but just excited to be back with the guys," Dunn said. "We're playing good ball. I just want to slide in and help out wherever I can."
Jackson, who landed on the 15-day DL on April 19 with a right triceps strain, was reinstated on May 20. The right-hander owned a 5.91 ERA through eight appearances this season.
Worth noting
The Marlins received some encouraging news regarding Miguel Rojas. The utility infielder, who exited Monday's game with a right shoulder irritation after a swing in the third inning, took 30 swings in the cage and was available for Tuesday's game.
"He's OK today," Mattingly said. "I'll use him. I'll try to stay away from him if I can, but I'm not gonna be afraid to use him."
