JUPITER, Fla. -- Marlins shortstop was excused from the team's first full-squad workouts on Friday as the 27-year-old testified in federal court in Miami.
On trial are agent Bartolo Hernandez and trainer Julio Estrada, who are accused of conspiracy and alien smuggling.
"He's part of a legal situation which is not of his doing," Marlins president David Samson said. "It has nothing to do with him. He has not been named or implicated in any way, shape or form. But when that branch of government calls and says, 'Could you please be here?' We can't say, 'But it's the first day of Spring Training.'"
Hechavarria is expected to rejoin the Marlins on Saturday.
Spring Training opened for the Marlins on Tuesday with pitchers and catchers working out. Friday marked the first day all players were on the field.
