CHICAGO -- When Tomas Telis was pulled from Triple-A New Orleans' game on Monday, he had an inkling he might be rejoining the Marlins.
"Yeah," the switch-hitting catcher said of the process. "Always good news."
Sure enough, Telis was in the Marlins' clubhouse Tuesday for the second game of a series against the Cubs. The move came after the team placed first baseman Justin Bour on the 10-day DL with a left ankle contusion.
Telis started Monday's game for New Orleans at first base and said he's been alternating between that spot and his primary position of catcher. And though he said he was still learning the nuances of first base, he thinks he's made progress there this year.
"I think I improved a lot [with] my defense," Telis said. "Sometimes I feel comfortable. Sometimes I feel weird."
However, that doesn't mean Telis will be filling in for the Marlins at first base. Asked about his plans for the position, Marlins manager Don Mattingly said there "wasn't too much of a thought" to put Telis at first, barring a crazy kind of game with several pinch-hitters and replacements. Tyler Moore made the start at first Tuesday night.
"Tyler in general. [We] may see what we mess around with, with [J.T. Realmuto] a little bit," Mattingly said. "We can do [Derek Dietrich] and [Christian Colon] at third."
As for Bour, Mattingly said there was uncertainty about his initial timetable to return and that the team couldn't afford to waste a roster spot while he sat out. The manager said he expects Bour back once the DL stint is up.
"In general, we think it's going to be 10 days," Mattingly said. "Obviously you never know. I didn't think it was going to be a DL [stint], either."
Telis has played in 53 big league games with the Marlins and Rangers. He's made two pinch-hit appearances for Miami this season after going 4-for-13 with a home run in 2016.
Volquez in line for Thursday start
Edinson Volquez threw a bullpen session and ran on his injured ankle, and the right-hander has been cleared to make the start Thursday in Pittsburgh. Volquez went through those tests on Tuesday and seemed fine doing so -- or at least no different than usual.
"Did you see him all those other days when he runs?" Mattingly joked. "I don't think he enjoys it any time."
Volquez, who hurt the ankle in a collision at first base for the first out of his no-hitter on Saturday, is 2-7 this year with a 3.79 ERA. His last three starts have all been quality starts, and barring something unforeseen, he'll have a chance to add to that Thursday in the series opener against the Pirates.
"He looked good. He threw his 'pen, then he did a little running," Mattingly said. "He gets another couple of days, so yeah, we're comfortable he'll be close to 100 percent."
