PHILADELPHIA -- Marlins prospect Dillon Peters underwent surgery recently to repair multiple fractures in his left thumb, and the 24-year-old is on "no-throw status" for six to eight weeks.
While pitching for Double-A Jacksonville, Peters fractured the thumb on his throwing hand after being struck by a comebacker on April 17. He had surgery on Friday, and there were no complications.
Ranked by MLBPipeline.com as the Marlins' No. 5 prospect, Peters was off to a strong start at Jacksonville, posting a 2-1 record with a 2.25 ERA in three starts.
If his recovery goes as scheduled, he could be throwing in about two months, and could be back in games around August.
Peters impressed in big league Spring Training, and before the injury, was considered as a starting-pitching option as early as June or perhaps around the All-Star break.
If the left-hander works himself back, he could be a potential candidate for the Marlins' rotation in the final month or two.
The Marlins selected Peters in the 10th round from the University of Texas of the 2014 MLB Draft, and he has a Minor League career record of 17-11 with a 2.67 ERA.
