MIAMI -- In their quest to reach the postseason, the Marlins are open to pretty much anything when it comes to making roster additions. That could even mean pursuing Alex Rodriguez after he is released by the Yankees on Friday.
Miami's potential need for another offensive threat surfaced because first baseman Justin Bour may need more time to recover from his right high ankle sprain, which has kept him on the disabled list since July 6.
According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the Marlins have had internal discussions about Rodriguez. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported that signing Rodriguez appears unlikely, but the possibility shouldn't be completely ruled out.

If Rodriguez is pursued, Miami likely would consider him a potential first-base option. But the 41-year-old has played just 9 2/3 innings at the position, all in 2015, and it is unclear if he could handle the job.
Rodriguez is scheduled to close out his playing career with the Yankees on Friday, and then he will be released. For 2017, A-Rod has a personal service deal with New York to be an advisor.

After being released, Rodriguez is expected to return to his home in Miami.
There is no indication the Marlins are planning to do so, but the club could seek trying Rodriguez out at first base to see how comfortable he looks at the position.
With Bour out, Miami has been using left-handed-hitting Derek Dietrich in a platoon situation with righty Chris Johnson. Miguel Rojas also has been used as a defensive replacement in the late innings.

If Bour is able to come back in a few days, the Marlins don't have as big a need to add another first-base option. But if he needs an extended amount of time, the club could be open to Rodriguez or other outside candidates.
