MIAMI -- Weather has played a factor in the rehab assignment schedules of Martin Prado and Adeiny Hechavarria. The two played for Class A Advanced Jupiter on Monday night, after appearing in a couple of games with Double-A Jacksonville.
The two played just two days with Jacksonville, with two more dates rained out. Rain even threatened play at Jupiter on Monday, but the weathered cleared by game time.
Prado has been on the 10-day disabled list since May 8 with a right hamstring strain, and Hechavarria has been out since May 10 with a left oblique strain.
"They're doing fine, but we've had weather problems," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "We were hoping they'd be at four by now. They're both doing fine and feeling good at this point. It's just a matter of getting them some reps and then kind of feeling they're mentally ready to play."
Ideally, the club is looking for both to play about a week in games before making a decision on reinstating them to the big league club.
"We're over a month, almost a month and a half without getting any kinds of at-bats," Mattingly said. "You'd like them to feel like they're ready to compete, as much as anything. When they come back, obviously, when you put guys in the lineup, you're expecting them to play well."
Worth noting
• After dropping two of three at Atlanta, the Marlins face increased urgency in their 10-game homestand, which won't be easy. The Nationals, Cubs and Mets are in South Florida. If they can track toward .500, they will stay in the mix, if not, it could impact the direction the front office goes by the non-waiver Trade Deadline in late July.
"It's a big homestand for us," Mattingly said. "We can't come in here and just get beat up and expect that we're going to stay in anything. Every game is important. You hate to put more pressure on one series over another. You can't really do that. But I think we've really been at that point for a little bit now. You just can't afford to go out and hit a bad streak. We've already had our bad streak, we can't afford any more."
• As expected, the Marlins reinstated Justin Nicolino (bruised left index finger) from the 10-day disabled list on Monday. To make roster room, reliever Drew Steckenrider was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans.
