WASHINGTON -- After throwing free and easy in the bullpen on Sunday, Wei-Yin Chen was on schedule to start on Wednesday against the Mets at Citi Field, but following Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Nationals, manager Don Mattingly said it would be Adam Conley getting the start in New York.
Chen will now start Friday's series opener against the Braves at Marlins Park. The bullpen session was encouraging news for the Marlins because Chen bruised his left elbow on Opening Day, and he has been dealing with swelling in his throwing arm.
"Yesterday, we were encouraged," Mattingly said before Sunday's game. "The day before, we were a little nervous. He was still feeling stuff, more in his wrist. Yesterday, he was better. His 'pen [Sunday] went really well. We're encouraged about that."
Chen was struck on his throwing elbow in the season opener on a comeback line drive off the bat of Detroit's Anthony Gose in the second inning. The lefty stayed in the game and made it through five innings.
