SAN FRANCISCO -- The Marlins were unable to complete a comeback Tuesday night, but they made things interesting on a night filled with warnings and ejections.
Dan Straily surrendered home runs to Buster Posey and Gorkys Hernandez. But the right-hander also struck Posey with a pitch and was ejected, along with manager Don Mattingly, in the Marlins' 6-3 loss to the Giants at AT&T Park.
The Marlins and Giants have split the first two games, and there has been plenty of drama, including going back to last week when the squads squared off for four games at Marlins Park.
"I think it's just two ballclubs trying to win every single game, not taking any at-bats off, and really trying to finish out the day with a win," Straily said. "We've been coming back a lot lately. Obviously, today, we weren't able to come back. But that's really what it's been it seems like the whole series with these guys."
In all six games, the Marlins have fallen behind by multiple runs, and until Tuesday they were able to pull even and win four of the first five. On Tuesday, Miami trailed by four runs early and closed the gap to 4-3 on JT Riddle's two-run triple and Brian Anderson's RBI double in the fourth inning off Dereck Rodriguez.

"We get back in there, we get some big hits," Mattingly said. "Anderson gets a big hit, Riddle gets a big hit. We have chances to get it back but then they kind of bounce right back and get runs."
In the fifth inning, the Giants built a three-run lead on RBI doubles by Alen Hanson and Hernandez. Both runs were charged to rookie Elieser Hernandez, who replaced Straily in the second.
Posey had a first-inning home run, and Hernandez added a two-run shot in the three-run second inning.

The early innings got a little tense after Posey was hit by a Straily fastball. In the top of the second, Rodriguez hit Lewis Brinson with a pitch, prompting the issuing of warnings.
"It's baseball," Brinson said. "We had a great win last night. I don't really think anything came of it today. It's just kind of a regular baseball game."
Losing Straily in the second inning meant the Marlins had to rely on their bullpen to pick up the remaining 6 2/3 innings, with Hernandez working 2 2/3 innings, followed by two innings from Brad Ziegler and an inning each from Adam Conley and Drew Steckenrider.

"That stinks to lose [Straily] in the second inning," Brinson said. "He's a workhorse and is pitching well. He's been working Posey inside, and I think that was the game plan, and one just got away from him, I think.
"The way we fought at home, taking three out of four. And here, taking the win Monday, and obviously they got us tonight. Not just the past series with them, but the past couple of series with other teams, we've really been fighting as a team and pulling together and for one another."
WARNINGS, EJECTIONS
There was some carryover from Monday's 5-4 Marlins win. In the second inning, Brinson was plunked by Rodriguez's 91.9 mph fastball. Immediately, home-plate umpire Andy Fletcher issued warnings to both benches, prompting Mattingly to exchange words with the umpires. In the ninth inning Monday, Brinson had the game-tying single off Hunter Strickland. Brinson, who took a first pitch up and in, flipped his bat after his hit. When Strickland was replaced in the inning, he stared at Brinson, who was on third base. Things got more heated in the bottom of the second inning Tuesday when Straily plunked Posey, drawing an ejection. Because warnings had been issued, Mattingly automatically was ejected as well.

"If they thought there was going to be something going on, they should have given both teams warnings before the game," Mattingly said. "If they thought it was intentional on their part, he should have been out of the game."

The 1 1/3 innings by Straily marked his shortest career start. His previously fewest innings in a start came while with the Reds on Aug. 29, 2016, at the Angels, 2 2/3.

"This is actually a great ballpark, but it's a tough ballpark for outfielders. There's some angles out there, obviously the wind can play a part of it. I'm not sure the wind played much part of anything tonight. This is actually a fun ballpark because it's got some angles, and it's got some things you have to deal with.
