MIAMI – Right-hander Tyler Phillips tossed five-plus innings as the surging Marlins swept the D-backs in Thursday afternoon’s 2-0 victory at loanDepot park.
Miami pitching has not given up a run in 19 consecutive frames, marking the longest span since July 28-Aug. 1, 2025 (22 IP). The Marlins completed back-to-back shutouts during that stretch.
Since dropping a season-high five games to close out May, Miami (34-35) has won eight of nine to open June for MLB’s best record this month. The club is just one game below .500 for the first time since April 29, when it held a 15-16 record.
Phillips didn’t allow a hit until Ketel Marte’s leadoff double in the fourth, working around that and a walk to elude damage, and pitched into the sixth for the first time as a starter this season.
Manager Clayton McCullough took out Phillips following Jorge Barrosa’s leadoff single in the frame, which turned the lineup over for a third time. Righty Michael Petersen came on in relief and kept Arizona off the scoreboard in the sixth.
Right-hander Anthony Bender stranded runners on the corners in the seventh, while righty Calvin Faucher and closer Pete Fairbanks pitched a perfect eighth and ninth, respectively.
Miami’s lineup did just enough to back Phillips and four relievers.
In the first inning, Liam Hicks and Otto Lopez led off with back-to-back singles, though Hicks got thrown out trying to go from first to third on Lopez’s hit. Lopez advanced to second on a disengagement violation, stole third thanks to a swim move and scored on Xavier Edwards’ sacrifice fly.
The Marlins tacked on a two-out run in the fourth. After Kyle Stowers walked and Edwards singled to open the inning, the next two batters were unable to drive them in. Jakob Marsee came through with an RBI single to center.
