PHOENIX -- When the ownership group led by Bruce Sherman and Derek Jeter takes over the Marlins, four prominent members of the organization will not be back. The organization is not retaining special assistants Jack McKeon, Andre Dawson, Tony Perez and Jeff Conine, according to multiple sources. The club has not confirmed.
Turnover is common when teams are sold, and MLB.com has learned that team president David Samson, who also will not be back, informed the four that they will not be part of the franchise next season. The Miami Herald first reported the changes.
McKeon, the manager of the Marlins' 2003 World Series-title team, has been a special assistant to the owner for 12 years.
Dawson and Perez, two Hall of Famers, have been special assistants to the president, and Conine, one of the most popular players in franchise history, also was a special assistant to the president.
Perez and Dawson have been special assistants for 16 years, and Conine has been in the role since 2008.
