ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals shortstop left Friday’s 4-3 win against the Red Sox in the top of the fifth inning after being hit by a pitch in his previous plate appearance.

The Cardinals announced that Winn was removed from the game due to a left lower leg contusion. replaced Winn at shortstop in the defensive alignment for St. Louis.

Winn was hit in the left leg, just below the knee, by an 84.0 mph sweeper from Red Sox starter Connelly Early in the bottom of the third inning. Winn spent some time shaking off the feeling before staying in the game to run the bases. He played defensively in the fourth inning before giving way to Saggese in the following frame.

Winn reached base twice in the game, adding a walk in his first plate appearance to the more painful trip to first base that followed.

This latest physical misfortune comes for Winn after he was involved in a car accident on slick St. Louis roads while leaving Busch Stadium following the final game of the team’s previous homestand on April 1. He was in the lineup for the Cardinals’ next game on April 3 in Detroit -- but departed that game with hip tightness.

Winn was held out of the lineup for the rest of the weekend before returning to the fold on Monday in Washington, D.C.
