PHILADELPHIA -- Gold Glove shortstop Masyn Winn was not in the Cardinals’ starting lineup for Friday’s game against the Phillies due to a left thumb injury.
It was the second straight day in which the 24-year-old was not starting. He did enter as a pinch-runner in St. Louis’ six-run ninth inning in Thursday’s wild 10-9 victory over the Reds.
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said tests did not indicate anything serious but that Winn was in pain. He was scheduled for more treatment on his thumb on Friday.
“He needed today [off],” Marmol said. “We’ll see how he responds to treatment and comes in tomorrow. But the pain is there.”
In 121 games, Winn is slashing .238/.314/.326 with 19 doubles and 51 RBIs. He has just eight errors.
This is the second time this season that Winn has dealt with a thumb injury. He was a late scratch from the starting lineup on June 23 against the Diamondbacks due to left thumb irritation but was back in the lineup the next night.
JJ Wetherholt started in place of Winn at shortstop and batted leadoff.
