PITTSBURGH -- The rehab assignment timetable has come in for Matt Carpenter, and the Cardinals are preparing for his arrival with a move in Monday’s lineup construction as the team opens a four-game series against the Pirates.

Cardinals manager Mike Shildt confirmed that Carpenter will head to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday to begin what’s expected to be a three-game rehab stint (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) if all goes well.

“He’ll get some at-bats, and we’ll see what it looks like and go from there,” Shildt said.

President of baseball operations John Mozeliak told FOX Sports Midwest’s Dan McLaughlin on Monday that the club hopes to see Carpenter get four plate appearances each game, and he will likely return to the team on Friday.

With Tommy Edman and Yairo Muñoz filling in for Carpenter at third base -- and succeeding all the while -- this month, the Cardinals will face decisions as to how to manage the roster when their everyday hot-corner man returns. Shildt provided one such glimpse into what could happen in the coming week by starting Munoz in center field in Monday’s 6-5, 10-inning win in a series opener at PNC Park.

Before this year, Munoz had received praise for his potential as a center fielder, though his biggest value comes in his ability to play six or seven positions. Munoz has made 15 of his 16 prior starts in the infield this season, but Shildt said the 24-year-old’s game translates well to the outfield.

“He’s got all the skill sets you like: he can run, he’s got some instincts to what he’s doing and he can throw as well,” Shildt said. “He’ll get a chance to go out there and run around out there and make some plays and do something with the bat in his hands.”

Edman has also filled in at third base during Carpenter’s absence, including Monday at Pittsburgh. His switch-hitting capability and ability to “work the count,” Shildt said, have also earned him the leadoff spot, usually occupied by Carpenter. Edman has posted a .775 OPS since his debut on June 8, and he collected five hits, including two doubles and a homer, in St. Louis’ four-game series against the Reds this past weekend.

Worth noting

• Shildt said Jedd Gyorko (right wrist surgery; left calf strain) is “slightly ahead of schedule” in his path back to the Cardinals, but there is still no timetable set for return.

• Jake Woodford, the club’s No. 23 prospect, drew eyes on Sunday with seven scoreless innings, bringing his ERA on the year to 3.47, which is third-best in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. He’s limited opponents to just 13 homers in 111 2/3 innings over 19 starts and a .219 batting average against.
