OAKLAND -- A's rookie Matt Chapman picked the perfect moment for his first Major League hit, delivering a two-run single in the eighth inning that gave the A's a 7-6 win over the Yankees at the Coliseum on Friday night.
In the second straight back-and-forth affair between the teams, Chapman turned on Yankees reliever Jonathan Holder's curveball and pulled it down the left-field line with the bases loaded, scoring Yonder Alonso and Ryon Healy to give the A's their second consecutive come-from-behind win.
"My approach was to get something up in the zone that I could handle and just get the ball into the outfield at the very least, get the job done and make sure we tied the game going into the ninth inning," Chapman said. "Luckily I was able to put the bat on the ball right there and get the job done."
Chapman and fellow rookies Jaycob Brugman and Chad Pinder knocked in three of the four runs the A's scored in the second, the only damage allowed by Yankees starter Luis Severino, who went six innings.

The Yankees worked their way back into the game against A's left-hander Sean Manaea, who would allow five runs in six innings. It started in the third inning with a three-run opposite-field homer from Northern California native Aaron Judge, his Major League-leading 23rd of the season.
The Yankees tied it in the fifth when Mason Williams singled home Ronald Torreyes, and they took the lead when Chris Carter blasted a solo home run to center in the sixth. Manaea allowed five runs in six innings with seven strikeouts.

Judge tripled and scored on a Starlin Castro single off of A's reliever Joshua Smith in the seventh, but the A's cut the deficit back down to one in the bottom of the inning when Pinder hit a sacrifice fly.
The Yankees have lost four games in a row for the first time this year. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said that the bullpen, in particular, has been struggling in this stretch.
"It's part of the game, every team's going to go through it," Girardi said. "I'm pleased with the way we keep fighting back and that will bode well during the course of the season. Right now our bullpen's been in a little bit of disarray. We'll get that straightened out."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Costly walks: Severino walked four on the night, and the two in the second inning came back to bite him. Khris Davis and Alonso started off the second inning by drawing walks off Severino, kickstarting the big four-run inning for the A's. Davis scored on Stephen Vogt's one-out double, and Alonso scored on a Chapman groundout.

Cool Coulombe: With the Yankees lead up to 6-4 in the seventh and two runners on with two out, A's manager Bob Melvin called for left-hander Daniel Coulombe out of the bullpen. Coulombe struck out Chase Headley swinging to end the seventh. He would earn the win by pitching a perfect eighth inning.

REPLAY REVIEW
The Yankees challenged that Chapman was safe at first base on an infield single in the bottom of the second inning. The call was overturned, delaying Chapman's first career hit.

The A's challenged a tag play at second base in the top of the fifth inning, arguing that Williams came off the base on his double. The review was not conclusive, so the play stood.

Girardi challenged another call in the eighth, after Rajai Davis was initially ruled safe at first base on a potential double play. The replay official overturned the call, awarding the Yankees the out to complete an inning-ending double play.

WHAT'S NEXT
Yankees: The Yankees will send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound Saturday at 4:05 p.m. ET. Tanaka had a good outing Monday night against the Angels in Anaheim, allowing one earned run on four hits with 8 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
A's: Right-hander Jesse Hahn, who is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in two starts since he returned from the disabled list, is back in action Saturday in a 1:05 p.m. PT matchup against the Yankees at the Coliseum.
