Dubón gets 1st start at 3B as Longoria rests

May 23rd, 2021

is one of the most flexible players on the Giants’ roster, and he continued to expand his versatility by drawing his first career Major League start at third base in Sunday afternoon’s series finale against the Dodgers at Oracle Park.

Primarily a middle infielder and center fielder, Dubón slid over to the hot corner so the Giants could rest Evan Longoria, who has slowed down at the plate following his torrid start to the season. After batting .292 with a .949 OPS and four home runs in April, Longoria is hitting only .194 with a .573 OPS and one homer over 19 games in May.

Manager Gabe Kapler said Sunday’s break, coupled with Monday’s off-day, could prove refreshing for the 35-year-old Longoria, who has appeared in 41 of the club’s first 46 games this year.

“One of the things that we know about our players is they're better with rest,” Kapler said. “One of the things that I've personally struggled with this season is getting each of our veteran players enough rest. It's a little bit different when you're running Dubón or [Steven] Duggar out there regularly. But these [veteran] guys, they've got some wear and tear on them. We have to be cognizant of that. I think I can personally do a better job of getting our veteran players the rest they need to be to be fresh and healthy.”

The Giants signed veteran Tommy La Stella over the offseason to help get Longoria off his feet more often in 2021, but La Stella is on the 60-day injured list with a left hamstring strain. Wilmer Flores, another backup option at third, is also sidelined with a right hamstring injury, but he has resumed swinging off a tee and should be ready to come back shortly after he’s eligible on Saturday.

Dubón has impressed with his defense this season, accumulating six outs above average through his first 40 games of the year, giving Kapler confidence that the 26-year-old Honduran will be able to handle third, despite his limited experience there.

“He's plenty athletic to make all the plays over there, plenty of arm strength,” Kapler said. “He doesn't have a ton of familiarity, but we feel like he's ready for it, and we wanted to keep [Donovan] Solano comfortable at second base.”

Catcher Buster Posey and first baseman Brandon Belt also received days off against Dodgers left-hander Julio Urías on Sunday. Curt Casali and Darin Ruf started in their place, respectively.

Injury updates

Kapler said the Giants are still monitoring Logan Webb to see if he’ll be ready to return from the IL after missing only one start with a right shoulder strain. Webb played catch up to 75 feet on Saturday and “felt really good” afterward, according to Kapler. Left-hander Scott Kazmir filled in for Webb against the Dodgers on Saturday, but the 37-year-old veteran could potentially shift to a long-relief role once Webb rejoins the rotation.

Aaron Sanchez (right bicep tightness) also played catch up to 60 feet on Saturday with no issues and is scheduled to continue his throwing progression.

Worth noting

• The Giants placed right-handed reliever Matt Wisler on the bereavement list so he could attend services for his grandmother, who passed away a few days ago. Left-hander Sam Selman was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take Wisler’s spot on the 26-man roster.

• Right-handed reliever James Sherfy, who joined the Giants on a Minor League deal over the offseason and is currently on the Triple-A Sacramento roster, was among the 28 players listed on Team USA’s training camp roster for the World Baseball Softball Confederation Baseball Americas Qualifier.

If he nabs a spot on the team -- which is managed by former Angels skipper Mike Scioscia -- Sherfy, 29, could have a chance to travel to Tokyo to represent the United States at the 2021 Summer Olympics.
