The Women's Pro Baseball League debuted on Saturday with a thrilling 10-8 win by the Los Angeles Queens over the New York Heights.
The WPBL is the the first women's pro league in the United States since the disbanding of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) in 1954. Naturally, Maybelle Blair, the 99-year-old baseball legend who played in the AAGPBL, was on hand to take in the action and throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Then Blair got to experience something that very few people get to enjoy: She got to meet her own mascot!
Blair, who was a pitcher in the AAGPBL in 1948, turns 100 in January and is the honorary chair of the advisory board for the WPBL. She is an iconic figure in women's baseball. But not many icons in any walk of life get immortalized in mascot form.
