Mets set to honor '86 Series champs in May

January 4th, 2016

NEW YORK -- Thirty years after forever stamping their mark on Flushing, the 1986 Mets will have another weekend of glory in Queens.
The team on Monday announced a 30th anniversary celebration for the '86 Mets, scheduled to take place May 27-29 at Citi Field while the Dodgers are in town. The organization has invited all players from that team to take part in a pregame ceremony on May 28, along with then-manager Davey Johnson and his entire coaching staff.

"It was a great run," reliever Jesse Orosco said on a conference call announcing the Mets' plans. "And we're still going. New York, they remember us when every occasion comes up. That's the fun part about being with the New York Mets organization."
The weekend's main event will be a May 28 pregame ceremony at Citi Field, recognizing players and coaches from the 1986 team. In addition, the Mets will commemorate the 30th anniversary of the victory over the Boston Red Sox with a pair of giveaways. All fans in attendance on May 27 will receive a 1986 World Series-themed T-shirt, while the first 15,000 fans through the gates on May 29 will receive a replica '86 World Series ring.
"The 1986 Mets made an indelible mark on the baseball and New York sports scene, capturing the hearts of fans like few other teams," Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said in a statement. "This 30th anniversary celebration provides our fans a way to reconnect their excitement to the historic achievements of 1986."
"That World Series really says it all for me," said outfielder Mookie Wilson, whose Game 6 dribbler through Bill Buckner's legs remains one of the most memorable plays in Mets history. "I think I've always had a great relationship in New York. But since that World Series, my name and what I've done is pretty much known around the whole country."
