Tim Teufel will remain in the Mets' organization as their roving Minor League infield instructor and club ambassador for the 2017 season, the team announced on Friday.
The Mets had replaced Teufel as their third-base coach, which he had been since 2012, with longtime D-backs coach Glenn Sherlock earlier this month.
Teufel, who was an infielder for the 1986 World Series champion Mets, has been with the organization for 24 of the past 30 seasons. He played for the Mets from '86-91, then returned to the team as a scout in '98. He has been with the Mets ever since.
When the Mets announced that Sherlock would be taking over as third-base coach, the team had said Teufel would be offered another position.
In a statement at the time, general manager Sandy Alderson said, "Tim Teufel has done an excellent job for us over many years in many different roles. I hope he continues in the Mets organization."
