WASHINGTON -- The remainder of Yoenis Cespedes' 2017 season is in doubt after the Mets placed the outfielder on the 10-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain, the club announced on Saturday.
The club also activated infielder Jose Reyes from the disabled list, selected the contract of outfielder Travis Taijeron from Triple-A Last Vegas and optioned right-handed pitcher Kevin McGowan to Las Vegas.
Mets manager Terry Collins said before Saturday's game against the Nationals that with Cespedes out, he'll experiment with different options for his replacement. While Taijeron will start on Saturday in right field, Collins said there's a chance Reyes could soon get a look in the outfield, as well.
"I have no plan yet," said Collins. "We're just going to see what takes place and mix and match -- try to maybe even get Jose out there a little bit just to get some other guys [playing] in the infield."
Cespedes suffered the injury in the first inning of Friday night's 4-2 victory over the Nationals as he attempted to score from second base on Dominic Smith's single. The 31-year-old limped home after rounding third base, but was ultimately sent back to third after the umpiring crew ruled the ball hit the second-base ump. He was removed from the game and replaced by Matt Reynolds.
The hamstring injury is Cespedes' second this season. The other, which he suffered on his left leg in April, sidelined him for approximately six weeks.
"It's been very frustrating because I know how much work I've put into this [past] offseason to come in ready this year," Cespedes said on Friday night. "This one in particular was so frustrating because I think, right before this, I had felt the best I had felt all season long."
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson noted the similarities between his new ailment and the one he dealt with earlier in the year.
"I'd say his season is in jeopardy," Alderson told MLB.com. "I wouldn't necessarily expect it to be as long [as his previous DL stint], but we don't have that much time left in the season. Very disappointed, but that's what we have."
Cespedes is batting .292 with 17 home runs and 42 RBIs in 81 games in his second full season with New York.
Taijeron, 28, is batting .272 with 25 home runs and 78 RBIs in 125 games for the 52s this year. The La Mesa, Calif., native was drafted in the 18th round by the Mets in 2011, and Saturday will mark his MLB debut after seven seasons of working his way up New York's farm system.
"I just hope he gets the chance to show [what he can do] up here, that he can handle the pitching up here," Collins said. "I think it's another great story of a guy who's persevered in the Minor Leagues and put up numbers and [is] finally getting his opportunity -- and I hope he runs with it."
Reyes, who was on the DL with a left oblique strain, is hitting .223 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs in 113 games for the Mets in 2017.
McGowan allowed one run in 1 1/3 frames in his one appearance for the Mets. He is 5-4 with a 4.06 ERA in 62 innings for Las Vegas this season.

While Cespedes will be a coveted early round fantasy pick next spring, he can be dropped right away in all redraft formats. Shallow-league Cespedes owners can check waivers for a replacement such as Keon Broxton, Kevin Kiermaier or Ian Happ, and those in deeper leagues could take a look at Manuel Margot, Max Kepler or Nick Williams. Finally, any owner looking to play the matchups down the stretch would be wise to consider starters opposing a Mets lineup that has lost Cespedes, Michael Conforto, Jay Bruce, Curtis Granderson, Neil Walker and Lucas Duda in recent weeks.
