Mets top-ranked prospect carries power surge into Winter League competition

Jefferson Rojas completed a career campaign during the regular season on a power heater -- mashing five home runs over his final 11 contests between Double-A and Triple-A. The top-ranked Mets prospect has brought that power to Caribbean as well.

In just his second game for the Gigantes del Cibao in the Dominican Republic, MLB's No. 68 overall prospect clubbed a pair of jacks as part of a three-hit effort to pace Cibao's 7-1 win over Tigres del Licey at Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal on Saturday night.

Rojas opened the season with Double-A Knoxville in the Cubs organization before being dealt to the Mets at the Trade Deadline in the deal for starter Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor. The 21-year-old transitioned seamlessly from the Southern League to the Eastern League and completed his season with six games at Triple-A Syracuse.

Overall, Rojas slashed .274/.338/.505 with 57 extra-base hits, -- including a career-high 27 homers -- 93 RBIs, 90 runs scored and 21 stolen bases in 126 games.

Through his first two contests with Cibao, the native of the Dominican Republic is 4-for-7 with a pair of dingers, four runs, three RBIs, a walk and a stolen base -- good for a 2.054 OPS.

On Saturday, the righty-swinging infielder turned around the first pitch he saw -- a 92.4 sinker from Vladimir Gutierrez and launched it over the left-field wall. In the seventh, Rojas got ahold of an off-speed offering from right-hander Luis Frías and crushed his second jack to left.

Rojas inked a $1 million bonus out of the Dominican Republic in 2022 and quickly prompted the Cubs to challenge him with an aggressive assignment to begin his pro career. He was the youngest regular (age 18) in the Single-A Carolina League in 2023, the second-youngest batting qualifier (age 19) in the High-A Midwest League in 2024 and the second-youngest everyday player in the Double-A Southern League (age 20) when he was promoted there in July 2025.

That season was a tale of two halves as he slashed .278/.379/.492 in the Midwest League, but just .164/.279/.205 following his promotion. He was back to being a solid performer with Knoxville at the start of 2026 and had already established a career high with 15 homers in 91 games before the trade to New York.
