Avilan heads to IL as bullpen shuffles

MILWAUKEE -- Lefty , who exited Friday night’s game after facing three hitters in relief, was placed on the 10-day injured list with left elbow soreness on Saturday, and right-hander was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse.

“We’re going to get him to New York and have him evaluated there,” manager Mickey Callaway said. “I think he’ll see the doctors there, and then do whatever they recommend.”

Avilan threw 11 pitches, allowing a one-out double to Hernan Perez. He left the game after striking out Ben Gamel.

“Last night was the first time he felt anything,” Callaway said. “He was just trying to get loose, and it didn’t happen for him.”

Flexen is 2-1 with a 4.42 ERA in four starts at Syracuse with 30 strikeouts in 18 1/3 innings.

“It was his [turn in the rotation] tomorrow. He’s pretty fresh,” Callaway said. “He can give us length if we want to.”

Flexen was called up April 20 for a spot start when Jacob deGrom went on the injured list. Flexen allowed six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings with four walks in a 10-2 loss to St. Louis.

“The last time he was up here, we saw pretty good stuff coming out of the arm, 95-96 [mph] with a really good slider,” Callaway said. “And we feel at this point he can come up here and probably give us the best innings.”

Avilan’s situation would not affect the timeline for the return of reliever , who has been on the 10-day injured list since April 22 with left elbow soreness.

“He threw a live BP today,” Callaway said of Wilson. “We’ll see how he comes in tomorrow and then go from there. He threw 20 pitches, the ball was coming out great, good breaking stuff, so he looks really good.”

Callaway said he did not know if Wilson would need a rehab assignment.

“Facing hitters, he hasn’t been out that long. He was around the zone and, like I said, the breaking stuff was really good,” Callaway said. “So, if he comes in tomorrow, and he feels like everything’s good, then we can make a decision.”

Lowrie joins Syracuse as rehab continues
Infielder , on the 10-day IL with a left knee capsule sprain, was expected to be playing Saturday night for Syracuse against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Callaway said.

Lowrie began his rehab assignment with two games at Class A Advanced Port St. Lucie with one hit in seven at-bats and one RBI.
