The Mets have revamped the order of their starting rotation, as the club announced that right-hander Tobias Myers will get the start on Sunday against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, replacing lefty David Peterson, who was previously slated to face Chicago.
The change of plans is not injury related, and Peterson will reportedly be available to pitch out of the bullpen on Sunday, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic (subscription required).
Myers, who was acquired this past offseason from Milwaukee alongside Freddy Peralta, has made six relief appearances for the Mets this season, compiling a 3.46 ERA with nine strikeouts over 13 innings. The 27-year-old has starting experience, having started six games for Milwaukee last season, and making 25 starts as a rookie in 2024.
Peterson, who was an All-Star last season, has struggled early on this year. After tossing 5 1/3 scoreless innings in his season debut on March 28, Peterson has an 8.79 ERA and a 1.95 WHIP through 14 1/3 innings this month. In his most recent start, Peterson allowed four runs and walked four batters in five innings during a 4-0 loss to the Dodgers on Monday.
The Mets will be looking to snap a 10-game losing streak when Myers and Co. wrap their three-game series in Chicago on Sunday. It's the club's longest losing streak since it dropped 11 consecutive games in 2004.
There have been myriad issues with the Mets during this slide, including the starting rotation, which has logged a 5.65 ERA over the past 10 games. They got a decent start from Peralta on Saturday, but after he issued back-to-back walks with two outs in the sixth inning, he was relieved by left-hander Brooks Raley, who immediately gave up a tiebreaking three-run homer to pitch-hitter Carson Kelly en route to a 4-2 defeat.
"We haven’t been able to put together a complete game,” manager Carlos Mendoza said after the latest loss. “It’s either the offense, starting pitching, not making a pitch, not making a play, not getting the big hit. Just having a hard time playing a complete game right now."
The Mets will return home to Citi Field after this series and open a three-game set against the Twins beginning on Tuesday, with Nolan McLean scheduled to be on the mound.
