MIAMI -- The Marlins defense has secured the ball well over their recent hot streak, and it made history in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Cubs at Marlins Park.
Per STATS LLC, Miami's infield has gone 26 straight games without recording an error dating back to May 30, which marks the most consecutive games without an error by an infield since 1913.
The Fish have also committed a Major League-low three errors in June. The last error by a Marlins infielder was Derek Dietrich's fielding miscue in a 7-3 win over the Braves on May 29. Marcell Ozuna's blunder in Miami's 4-2 victory over Chicago on Thursday marks the last error by any Marlins player.
"The defense has been really good," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "We seemed shaky early, but we really kind of hit our stride. Martin [Prado's] unbelievable at third. [Adeiny Hechavarria], obviously, he's been one of those guys on the Gold Glove list the last few years. Derek's been solid. [Justin Bour] been fine at first. We've been a pretty good defensive club, and we thought we would be."
When Jose Fernandez was told the number of error-free games the infield behind him had gone, he knocked on the table in front of him after Sunday's win.
"Don't say that again," Fernandez said. "It's great. You guys probably see it a lot. They come here early. They do early work. When we're hitting BP they're catching ground balls."
Last year, the Baltimore Orioles' infield strung together a similar streak, going 25 straight games without an error from May 22-June 15.
Over the past 10 years, only four teams have achieved this feat with 20 or more games. The Mariners' infield went 24 contests in a row in 2012, while the Giants reached 24 as well in 2010.
