MIAMI – The Miami Marlins today acquired Minor League right-handed pitcher Jace Beck and first baseman Jonathon Long from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for left-handed pitcher Braxton Garrett.
Beck, 26, is ranked as the Cubs’ No. 28 prospect by MLB Pipeline and leads their farm system with 116 strikeouts in 25 appearances (nine starts) between Double-A Knoxville (59.2 innings) and Triple-A Iowa (15.0 innings) this season. The 6-foot-9 right-hander has issued 35 walks against 116 strikeouts, pacing Cubs’ farmhands with a 35.0 percent strikeout rate while posting a combined 6-3 record and 3.62 ERA (30 ER/74.2 IP) during his first season in the organization. The Tuttle, Okla., native was named June’s Southern League Pitcher of the Month after going 2-0 with a 0.47 ERA (1 ER/19.0 IP), nine walks, and a league-leading 36 strikeouts over five appearances (three starts) with Double-A Knoxville.
In 128 appearances (16 starts) over parts of six Minor League seasons (2018-26), including 103 appearances across five seasons with the Mets organization, he has gone 18-16 with a 4.41 ERA (99 ER/202.0 IP), 134 walks, and 306 strikeouts.
Beck, who missed the entire 2024 season in recovery from “Tommy John” surgery, was originally selected by New York-NL in the 22nd round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft out of Blanchard HS (Blanchard, Okla.). He elected free agency following the 2025 season and was signed by Chicago-NL as a Minor League free agent on Nov. 18, 2025.
Long, 24, is ranked as the Cubs’ No. 10 prospect and the No. 7 first base prospect in MLB, per MLB Pipeline. The right-handed hitter is slashing .283/.364/.455 (112x396) in 99 games with Triple-A Iowa this season, leading the team in runs scored (67), RBI (62), and total bases (180), while his 12 home runs are tied for third. He also paces the Cubs organization with 30 doubles, which rank second among all Triple-A hitters and are tied for fifth among full-season Minor Leaguers.
The Orange, Calif., native was named the Buck O’Neil Cubs Minor League Player of the Year in 2025 after leading the International League with 157 hits in his first season at the Triple-A level. He also ranked among the league’s leaders in total bases (2nd, 246), runs (T2nd, 86) walks (3rd, 79), RBI (3rd, 91), and OBP (5th, 404), earning International League Post-Season All-Star and Baseball America Triple-A All-Star honors.
Originally selected by Chicago-NL in the ninth round of the 2023 First-Year Player Draft out of Long Beach State (Long Beach, Calif.), Long owns a career .291 AVG (407x1400) and .861 OPS in 379 Minor League games (2023-26) with 252 runs, 78 doubles, four triples, 56 home runs, and 237 RBI.
Garrett, 28, owns a 4-4 record with a 2.90 ERA (25 ER/77.2 IP) in 15 starts (16 appearances) with Triple-A Jacksonville this season, with 29 walks, 83 strikeouts, and a 0.98 WHIP. The Florence, Ala., native has posted a career 16-20 record and 4.16 ERA (153 ER/330.2 IP) in 67 games (65 starts) over six seasons with the Marlins from 2020-2026, excluding the 2025 season which he missed due to “Tommy John” surgery. The left-handed pitcher was selected seventh overall by the Marlins in the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Florence HS (Florence, Ala.).
