Marlins have strong core of starting prospects
MIAMI -- A youthful rotation is the strength of the Marlins at the Major League level, and the organization is upbeat about the next wave of starting pitching that’s coming through Miami’s farm system.
The Minor League season opens on Thursday, and the Triple-A New Orleans rotation will feature right-handers Nick Neidert, ranked by MLB Pipeline as Miami’s No. 4 prospect, and Zac Gallen, rated No. 18. Both could be headed to the big leagues at some point this year.
Top prospect Sixto Sanchez will start off in extended spring training as he builds up for the season. When ready, the hard-throwing 20-year-old is expected to join Double-A Jacksonville. The Jumbo Shrimp’s staff also will include Jorge Guzman (No. 9 prospect), Jordan Yamamoto (No. 17) and Robert Dugger (No. 22).
As deep as the Marlins are at the upper levels, the rotation that has the most upside is Class A Advanced Jupiter, which features all five starters on the Top 30 list: Braxton Garrett (No. 7), Edward Cabrera (No. 8), Jordan Holloway (No. 13), Trevor Rogers (No. 15) and Will Stewart (No. 21).
“Top to bottom, we never had this much starting pitching depth,” Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill said. “That’s why I’m so excited, when you think about the layers that we’ve been able to accumulate, and with the guys we have at the Major League level.”
Sanchez -- ranked No. 27 on Pipeline’s Top 100 list -- and Stewart were acquired from the Phillies in the J.T. Realmuto trade.
Sanchez is healthy, but he is being eased into action as he rebounds from right elbow inflammation.
“He’s on the mound, and he’s throwing,” Hill said. “He’s looked really good. A lot of the things we’ve wanted to do, delivery-wise, he picked up very quickly. Stuff to take pressure off his arm, and hopefully stay healthy all season, and have him throw meaningful innings for that rotation.”
Worth noting
• Outfielder Victor Victor Mesa, Miami’s No. 2 prospect, will open the season with the Jupiter Hammerheads. Mesa dealt with a right hamstring strain in Spring Training, but he has recovered and will join Jupiter.
• Victor Mesa Jr., the younger brother of Victor Victor Mesa, has moved into MLB Pipelines’ Top 30 list as Miami’s No. 30 prospect. Mesa replaces right-hander Sandy Alcantara, who graduated from the list after he threw eight shutout innings for the Marlins on Sunday in a 3-0 win over the Rockies.
• Right-fielder Garrett Cooper, an MRI confirmed, has a mild left calf strain. It’s expected to be several weeks before he resumes baseball activities.
