MILWAUKEE -- As he works back from a right elbow strain and mononucleosis, Reds pitcher Michael Lorenzen's rehab program has gone swimmingly. Lorenzen threw to hitters in live batting practice in Arizona on Friday, the latest step in his recovery plan.
"He's to that point now where he's going to be firing in a ballgame. That's great news," Reds manager Bryan Price said on Saturday.
Lorenzen is scheduled to throw two innings in an extended spring game at the club's facility in Goodyear, Ariz.
Still undetermined is the role Lorenzen might have for the Reds when he is ready to come off the 60-day disabled list. Entering camp, he was set to compete for a rotation spot, but he hurt his elbow in his first spring game in early March. He contracted mono in early April, setting him back even further.
A bullpen role remains a possibility for Lorenzen, too.
"We're just going to see how far we can get him here feeling comfortable and good," Price said. "Things can change based on need. As you guys know, we're needy. Let's just keep it game-to-game right now."
Worth noting
• Raisel Iglesias (shoulder) threw a 25-pitch bullpen session in Goodyear without issue on Friday. It was his first bullpen session since he went on the DL May 1. With extended spring expected to end early next month, Iglesias' game action, when he is ready, will happen on a rehab assignment at one of the organization's affiliates.
• Homer Bailey (elbow) long tossed from a distance of 180 feet without complication on Friday.
"We're hoping to get him somewhere in that first week of June, get him [back] on the mound for the first time," Price said. "He's throwing great."
