Pineda's return Tuesday a boon for rotation

August 30th, 2020

As the Twins reportedly kick the tires on a few big-name starters on the trade market ahead of Monday's 3 p.m. CT Trade Deadline, they'll already benefit from an important addition to their rotation, even if they don't make a move.

The club announced Sunday that right-hander will make his 2020 debut on Tuesday against the White Sox following the completion of the remaining 36 games of the 60-game suspension he incurred last September following a positive test for a banned diuretic.

Pineda's return will, at last, give the Twins a full five-man rotation alongside José Berríos, Randy Dobnak, Rich Hill and Kenta Maeda -- something the club had been lacking almost all season due to a combination of injuries and underperformance. The Twins had been filling the gaps with a combination of spot starts and bullpen games in the meantime, and Pineda's return should go a long way in keeping additional relievers fresh on any given day.

Pineda was arguably the club's most consistent starter last season, when he posted a 4.01 ERA, 140 strikeouts and only 28 walks in 146 innings. He reportedly hit 94 mph with his fastball as he ramped up at the club's alternate training site in St. Paul, Minn.

That's not to mention the fact that Jake Odorizzi, a 2019 All-Star, is expected back in September, and veteran right-hander Homer Bailey could still make some impact when he's eligible for reinstatement from the 45-day injured list on Sept. 13, which should further fortify the club's starting depth.

"There's certainly always opportunities to try and get better, but I really look at a lot of our group that is coming back to this team as ways for us to meaningfully improve just already organically, in-house," president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said earlier in the week regarding the club's approach to the Trade Deadline.

Still, MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi reported in the past several days that the Twins have at least checked in on both Angels right-hander Dylan Bundy and Rangers right-hander Lance Lynn, a pair of controllable, high-end starters who have performed well in 2020. A starter would make less sense for 2020, especially upon Pineda's return, but rotation help is indeed a need for 2021, with Odorizzi, Hill and Bailey all potentially bound for free agency.

Rosario dealing with ankle soreness
Eddie Rosario wasn't in Sunday's starting lineup as he sat with left ankle soreness that he felt late in the Twins' 4-2 loss to Detroit in the second half of Saturday's doubleheader, leading to his exit in the ninth inning. It's the same ankle that he sprained last season and disrupted his fielding for much of the second half, though it's unclear if the injuries are related.

"We knew he was probably going to be due for an off-day at some point soon anyway, so we just figured we would make it today," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. "It made a lot of sense. ... I don’t have any significant update on him one way or another, but like I said, dealing with a little soreness."
