TORONTO -- Coming off an appearance at the 2026 All-Star Game, the White Sox lost third baseman late in Friday’s 12-4 win against the Blue Jays.

Vargas was lifted for pinch-runner Luisangel Acuña after being hit in the hand by a 93.3 mph sinker in the eighth inning. The 26-year-old initially started down towards first base, but manager Will Venable -- who didn’t appear concerned about Vargas’s status postgame -- opted to take his young star out of the game with Chicago up big.

“I think he's fine,” Venable said. “He'll be evaluated now, but he was fine.”

With Vargas out for the final two innings, Acuña took over the shortstop duties to end the game, pushing Colson Montgomery to third base.

Vargas was 1-for-4 on the night before taking the offering from Blue Jays reliever CJ Van Eyk off the padding on his hand.

Despite being taken out of the game, Vargas appeared to be in good spirits as he returned to the dugout, giving high fives to his White Sox teammates.

Vargas, who homered at Tuesday’s Midsummer Classic in Philadelphia, has been a key piece in Chicago’s resurgent 2026. After his five plate appearances on Friday, he owns a .245/.356/.490 slash line with 21 home runs in 95 games.
