CHICAGO -- Miguel Vargas’ two-out, two-run home run gave the White Sox a 4-3 victory over the Tigers in the 10th inning Friday night at Rate Field. Vargas connected off Drew Anderson to push the White Sox to 30-27 and a season-best three games over .500.
Trailing 2-1 in the ninth of a lackluster offensive night, Chicago scored one run off Kyle Finnegan to tie the score. Rikuu Nishida’s sacrifice bunt brought in Andrew Benintendi from third, after Benintendi hesitated when Finnegan fielded the bunt and then raced home ahead of first baseman Spencer Torkelson’s errant throw.
After the Tigers scored one run in the top of the 10th, Chicago was down to its final out when Vargas stepped to the plate. He saw a pair of changeups from Anderson, seeing one go by for a called strike and then sending the next over the left-field wall as a packed stadium erupted in celebration.
The White Sox won the game but might have lost slugging first baseman Munetaka Murakami to injury. Murakami departed Friday’s contest with right hamstring tightness after beating out a one-out fielder's choice grounder to second in the third inning. He is undergoing further evaluation, according to the White Sox.
Chicago's first baseman, who has appeared in all 57 games this season, appeared to grab at his right hamstring and wince as he was walking back to first. Murakami was replaced by Luisangel Acuña, who scored from first on Vargas’ double in the next at-bat.
