Folty to return Saturday as rotation takes shape

April 23rd, 2019

CINCINNATI -- A little more than a month into the season, is finally set to join an Atlanta starting rotation that has started to take shape over the past few weeks.

The Braves plan to activate Foltynewicz from the injured list to start Saturday night’s home game against the Rockies. The All-Star right-hander cruised through just one of the four rehab starts he made for Triple-A Gwinnett. But he has given the club confidence he has made up for the time lost when he missed most of Spring Training because of a bone spur in his right elbow.

“I’m not looking so much at the results,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “I want him to feel good.”

Foltynewicz completed his final test on Sunday, when he allowed six earned runs and seven hits over 5 1/3 innings against Durham. The results weren’t glowing, but the reports provided by Gwinnett manager Damon Berryhill gave the Braves confidence the 27-year-old right-hander is ready to once again taste the adrenaline only a Major League start can create.

“They said there were some mishit balls and some other times when they squared him up pretty good,” Snitker said. “But overall, it was the best he’s looked and the best he’s felt.”

While the Braves are going to allow Foltynewicz to make his season debut with an extra day of rest, they have decided to bring back on normal rest to start Thursday afternoon’s series finale against the Reds. will also start Friday’s series opener against the Rockies with regular rest.

Had the Braves given Teheran and Fried an extra day of rest, they would have likely had to promote or another Gwinnett pitcher to start the final game in Cincinnati. Newcomb’s lone start since being demoted included four walks, five strikeouts and two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings. The preference is to provide the erratic southpaw time to work on his control at the Minor League level.

While it’s unknown when Newcomb might return to the Majors, Foltynewicz’s return and Fried’s emergence have helped the Braves steadily feel more comfortable about the makeup of their rotation. Injuries and the desire to start nothing but right-handers against the Phillies led Bryse Wilson and Kyle Wright to both make a start during the season’s first series. Wilson had accounted for the only previous career start made by this young duo.

Barring any unforeseen developments, the Braves’ rotation will likely consist of Foltynewicz, Fried, Kevin Gausman, Teheran and Mike Soroka by the end of this weekend. Wright, Newcomb or Touki Toussaint could be called up to create an extra day of rest for some of these starters while the team plays on 20 consecutive days through May 12.

“I’m kind of glad we’re on this 20-day run or whatever,” Snitker said. “It’s going to be good for us to play all these games and get settled in with the rotation. Getting all those guys back is going to come at a good time.”
