Meet White Sox 2nd-rounder Jared Kelley

June 11th, 2020

Here are 10 things to know about prep right-hander Jared Kelley, MLB Pipeline’s No. 12 Draft prospect, whom the White Sox nabbed in the second round on Thursday (47th overall).

• As a freshman, Kelley played football and basketball, and ran track in addition to playing baseball. “If he would’ve stayed with it, he would’ve been the best that we’ve ever coached, a sure-fire [Division I player], anywhere he wanted to go, and probably the NFL,” Refugio (Texas) High School football coach Jason Herring told The Athletic. " ... He would've been the next big-time quarterback to come from Texas."

• Refugio is the birthplace of legendary Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan. Kelley, 18, obviously has a long way to go to even be considered in the same company as Ryan, but the connection is certainly a good start for a hard-throwing righty.

• Kelley, who has verbally committed to the University of Texas, will be the first player in Refugio High School history to be selected in the MLB Draft, and the best high school pitcher to be chosen from Texas since the Pirates took Jameson Taillon No. 2 overall in 2010.

• Kelley has been working with former Brewers right-hander Mike McClendon at Sports Fitness Solutions to continue his progression into what might ultimately be a frontline starter in the Majors.

• Kelly can pitch. We certainly know that. He can also apparently hit the ball pretty hard, too.

• Kelley, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound right-hander, opened the 2020 season as the top-ranked high school pitcher in the country. He was only able to get 12 innings in for the season before things were shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but in those 12 innings, 34 of the 36 outs he got came on strikeouts, and he didn't yield a hit. He was named the 2020 Gatorade Player of the Year in Texas.

• Kelley features a fastball that touches 99 mph and regularly sits around 96 mph with run. He also features a strong changeup with good fade and sink, as well as an ever-improving slider.

• In December of 2018, Kelley pitched for the USA 18U National Team in the Pan American championship, helping the Americans win a gold medal.

• In his junior year in 2019, Kelley posted a 0.22 ERA with 144 strikeouts over 65 innings and led Refugio to the Class 2A Division I state title. He dominated the showcase circuit, striking out five over two innings in the Under Armour All-America Game at Wrigley Field. He struck out four over two innings in the Perfect Game All-American Classic. He also pitched so well in the Area Code Games that some scouts called it the best pitching performance they had ever seen in the long history of the event.

• Scouts believe Kelley will move quickly through the Minor Leagues -- according to MLB Pipeline, he could reach the Majors before he turns 21.
