Last month, MLBPipeline.com named Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna and Diamondbacks right-hander Jon Duplantier as its Hitting and Pitching Prospects of the Year. Acuna led all Minor Leaguers with 181 hits and was one of only two to total 20 homers and 40 steals. Duplantier's 1.39 ERA was the second-lowest among full-season qualifiers in the last 32 years, behind only Justin Verlander's 1.29 in 2005.
Many other prospects had terrific seasons as well, and we're honoring them by selecting the top hitting and pitching prospect for each organization. Twenty-three of our 60 selections are currently on MLBPipeline's Top 100 Prospect list, including Nationals outfielder Victor Robles (No. 2), Acuna (No. 5), Reds third baseman Nick Senzel (No. 8) and Dodgers right-hander Walker Buehler (No. 10). Several more, such as Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers and Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins, were on the Top 100 earlier in the year before graduating to the big leagues.
Cardinals outfielder Harrison Bader is the lone position player to repeat from our 2016 selections. Five pitchers earned their second straight recognition: Chance Adams (Yankees), Jaime Barria (Angels), Stephen Gonsalves (Twins), Brent Honeywell (Rays) and Triston McKenzie (Indians).
