Major League Baseball announced Saturday it will donate $1 million to aid communities affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and the earthquake in Mexico.
The league's contributions are being sent to immediate relief efforts and long-term rebuilding endeavors through Habitat for Humanity, Project C.U.R.E. and The U.S. Fund for UNICEF, among other nonprofit organizations to be named at a later date.
MLB has also announced it will supply funds for physicians and other medical personnel to travel to the impacted areas as part of its attempt to provide direct assistance to victims.
"These devastating natural disasters have deeply affected the baseball family," Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. "Players from Puerto Rico and Mexico are an important part of the past, present and future of our game. We hope that our contribution will aid immediate and ongoing efforts during this critical time and the long-term recovery for the people of Puerto Rico and Mexico."
With the numerous recent natural disasters striking the United States and its surrounding territories, MLB has raised more than $10 million through league and club donations in addition to fundraising websites to assist the affected individuals.
