Following an impressive and historic stretch in the batter's box, Red Sox outfielder Mookie Betts was named the American League Player of the Week on Monday.
Betts capped his big week at the plate with a career performance on Sunday, when he hit two homers and drove in eight runs in a 15-1 romp over the Blue Jays to help the Red Sox complete a three-game sweep in Toronto.
Following Sunday's monster performance, Betts was selected as an AL All-Star for the second straight season.
Betts went 4-for-6 with three runs in Sunday's win, becoming the first leadoff hitter in Red Sox history to record eight RBIs, and the first in the Majors since Ronnie Belliard for the Rockies in 2004. Betts is one of five players in big league history to amass eight RBIs while batting first.
"It's pretty cool to have your name mentioned like that," said Betts, who also became the second player in MLB history to accumulate at least four hits, two homers, eight RBIs and a stolen base in the same game, joining Carl Reynolds of the 1930 White Sox.
Betts was already having a big week leading up to Sunday's breakout performance. He had a hit in each of his first five games, recording multiple hits in four of those contests.
All told, Betts finished the week with 14 hits, 11 RBIs, six walks and 10 runs scored. Betts had two doubles and three homers and produced a .483/.556/.862 slash line in helping the first-place Red Sox go 6-1.
