WASHINGTON -- The Nationals announced their coaching staff for the 2022 season, with the return of four familiar faces, as well as four additions. Manager Dave Martinez expanded his staff from seven to eight members with the implementation of a catching and strategy coach.
Returning coaches
Tim Bogar: Bench coach This season marks Bogar’s third as Washington’s bench coach. It is his fifth year overall on the Nationals' staff (he previously held the role of first-base coach from 2018-19) and 13th as a big league coach. Bogar works closely with the infielders, and he stepped in to manage at points late in the season after Martinez underwent a foot procedure.
Pat Roessler: Assistant hitting coach Roessler became a member of the Nats’ coaching staff in 2020, and he is back for his third season as assistant hitting coach. His previous roles include Yankees player development advisor (2019) and Mets hitting coach (‘18) and assistant hitting coach (‘14-17).

Jim Hickey: Pitching coach Hickey joined the Nationals’ staff last season. He is entering his 17th year as a big league pitching coach, a role he previously held with the Cubs (2018), Rays (‘07-17) and Astros (‘04-06).
Henry Blanco: Catching and strategy coach Blanco steps into the newly created role of catching and strategy coach after being the Nationals’ bullpen coach since 2018. He is entering his eighth straight season coaching with Martinez, with the duo having previously been part of the Cubs’ staff together.
New to 2022 staff
Darnell Coles: Hitting coach Coles returned to the Nationals in October as hitting coach after holding several roles in their Minor League system, dating back 15 years. He most recently was the D-backs' hitting coach from 2019-21.
“I was born and raised in that organization, worked my way up from the bottom,” Coles said when he was hired last month. “Obviously, when you get an opportunity to come home, so to speak, it's always nice.”
Eric Young Jr.: First-base coach Young, a 10-year veteran outfielder, joins the Nationals for his first position on a Major League staff after being a coach for the Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate last season. During his playing career, he led the National League in stolen bases (46) in 2013. Young, 36, is the son of Braves first-base coach, Eric Young.
Gary DiSarcina: Third-base coach DiSarcina makes a move within the NL East after working on the Mets' staff from 2018-21, most recently as their third-base coach. He previously was on the coaching staff for the Angels and the Red Sox, where he began his managerial career in Boston’s Minor League organization. DiSarcina played 12 years in the Majors as a shortstop for the Angels.
Ricky Bones: Bullpen coach Like DiSarcina, Bones joins the Nationals’ staff from the Mets, where he held the role of bullpen coach from 2012-21. He was also a pitching coach in New York’s Minor League organization for part of the ‘19 season. Bones, an 11-year Major League pitcher, was the pitching coach for Washington’s Class A Advanced Potomac team in ‘05.
Those not returning to their roles on the Nats’ coaching staff for the 2022 season are former hitting coach Kevin Long, who was hired by the Phillies, first-base coach Randy Knorr and third-base coach Bob Henley.
