WASHINGTON -- The Nationals don't mind having family members with the same last name in their organization. On Thursday, the club added a second Kieboom during the 2016 MLB Draft by selecting infielder Carter Kieboom with the 28th overall pick in the first round.
He is the younger brother of Spencer Kieboom, a catcher ranked as the Nats' No. 21 prospect by MLBPipeline.com.

Carter Kieboom, who is from Marietta, Ga., was a compensation pick for right-hander Jordan Zimmermann, who signed with the Tigers last offseason. Kieboom is a right-handed hitter who is known to be an above average defender at shortstop. Most importantly, he could become a power hitter in the future. According to assistant general manager Kris Kline, the Nats don't see him switching to another position.

"He is a very athletic, physical shortstop," Kline said. "He has advanced approach to the plate. He has very good tools. He is going to be a real good big leaguer, good makeup. He has a really good feel for the game. He is a baseball player."
According to MILB.com, Kieboom had the best at-bats in the Under Armour All-America Game in July, including an opposite-field single against a 98-mph fastball from Riley Pint, the top-rated high school right-hander and the No. 4 overall pick in the Draft by the Rockies.
Kieboom is the first shortstop to be selected by the Nationals in the first round since Anthony Rendon in 2011.
