CLEVELAND -- Indians reliever fired a slider to and immediately grabbed at his right arm in a mix of frustration and pain. With that pitch, Cleveland's bullpen picture became a little more complicated on Thursday evening.
During a 13-11 loss in 11 innings to the Blue Jays in the opener of Thursday's doubleheader, Pillar singled on a 1-2 pitch from Goody in the seventh, forcing the pitcher out of the game with a right elbow injury. Goody, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list after the defeat, underwent X-rays and was initially diagnosed with elbow inflammation.
Indians manager Terry Francona noted that Goody would undergo an MRI exam on Friday to further examine the extent of the injury. After placing Goody on the DL, Cleveland selected the contract of reliever from Triple-A Columbus. To add Marshall to the 40-man roster, the Indians transferred righty (right rotator cuff tendinitis) to the 60-day disabled list.
"It's really tough," Indians starter said of Goody's injury. "He's part of the team. Every time when I see something like that, I feel really sad. I hope it's nothing really bad for him."
Goody had taken over for Carrasco in the sixth with one out and a runner on first base. Josh Donaldson smacked the right-hander's first pitch over Progressive Field's 19-foot wall in left for a two-run home run that tied the game at 7. Goody would get the final two outs in the sixth, then leave after one batter in the seventh.
In 12 appearances this season, Goody has posted a 6.94 ERA with 12 strikeouts and five walks in 11 2/3 innings. The righty turned in a 2.80 ERA in 56 games for Cleveland in 2017, striking out 72 batters in 54 2/3 innings.
The Indians have been trying to patch things together without relief ace , who is on the disabled list with a left hamstring injury and eligible for activation on Sunday. On Wednesday, the Tribe promoted from Triple-A Columbus to give the taxed bullpen a fresh arm, and designated veteran reliever Matt Belisle for assignment.
