TORONTO -- The depth on the Yankees' Triple-A bullpen shuttle has taken another hit, as right-hander Nick Rumbelow is heading for season-ending Tommy John surgery. He will have the procedure performed on Friday by Yankees team physician Christopher Ahmad at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. 
Rumbelow, a 24-year-old right-hander, made 17 appearances for New York last season and posted a 1-1 record with a 4.02 ERA.
He pitched a scoreless fourth inning for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday at Rochester and sustained the injury while warming up for a second inning. Recovery time for Tommy John surgery is generally 12-18 months.
"It's frustrating," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It's a kid that came up and did a pretty good job for us. We felt that he was going to help us at some point this year. We won't have him this year, and that's one less guy that we can turn to if we have an issue. We expect him back next year, and hopefully he heals quickly and his rehab goes well."
The injury follows one to right-hander Bryan Mitchell in his final Spring Training appearance. Mitchell sustained a fractured left big toe while covering first base that required surgery, putting him out until at least August.
Rumbelow was a seventh-round selection by the Yankees in the 2013 Draft from Louisiana State University. He allowed five runs and 15 hits in 8 2/3 spring innings (5.19 ERA) this year.
The other relievers currently at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre who are on the Yankees' 40-man roster are Nick Goody, Tyler Olson, James Pazos and Branden Pinder.
