Mariners injury updates: Vincent, Nicasio

June 12th, 2018

SEATTLE -- A day after he was supposed to pitch in his first rehab outing, Seattle Mariners reliever Nick Vincent was back on course Monday as he works his way back from a groin injury.
Vincent had originally been scheduled to get some rehab work at Class A Modesto on Sunday, but Mariners manager Scott Servais said that the right-hander opted to push that back so pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre Jr. could watch him throw.
Servais added that Vincent threw a bullpen session with Stottlemyre on Monday prior to the Mariners' contest against the Los Angeles Angels. He added that the reliever would probably have two rehab outings before he was activated.
"He threw in the bullpen here on Friday," Servais said. "He wanted Mel to lay eyes on him before he went and did the rehab, so they pushed it back."
Vincent was placed on the 10-day disabled list on May 27 with a strained right groin. So far this season, he's 3-1 with a 4.09 ERA in 22 innings.
Vincent's return became a matter of some importance after right-handed relievers and went on the disabled list on Friday.
Servais said Nicasio, a key cog in the back end of Seattle's bullpen, would play catch on Monday and had gotten a cortisone shot after experiencing swelling in his right knee.

"The doctor is going to look at him today and see where he goes from there," Servais said. "But he's doing much better, I just met with him a little while ago. He's upbeat."
The Mariners' manager also portrayed Nicasio's DL stint as precautionary.
"[Nicasio] just didn't feel good pushing off the mound," Servais said. "He did the right thing, tried to get it taken care of before it grows into something bigger."
Nicasio, who signed a two-year, $17 million free-agent deal with Seattle in December, has gone 1-3 with a 5.34 ERA in 28 2/3 innings this season.
