ANAHEIM -- This season, overall, hasn’t gone the way that left-hander Noah Cameron had hoped. But he’s been throwing the ball well this summer, and the results speak for themselves.
Cameron tossed a one-hit shutout in the Royals’ 3-0 win over the Angels at Angel Stadium on Sunday.
The 27-year-old struck out eight batters, using his secondary offerings effectively to get ahead in counts and get soft contact.
Particularly effective were his slider and changeup, the two pitches he used the most. Both pitches had whiff rates north of 40%, per Statcast, and were only hit hard three times out of 10 balls put in play.
Cameron flirted with history, too.
He carried a perfect game into the sixth inning, but walked Oswald Peraza to lead off the inning. The no-hit bid fell through the next inning, when Vaughn Grissom blooped a single into left field.
Cameron has a 1.19 ERA in his last five outings since he began calling his own pitches.
At the plate, Michael Massey stayed hot by turning in a 3-for-4 effort with a solo home run in the fourth to get the scoring started. It was Massey’s second three-hit performance of the weekend.
Bobby Witt Jr. also finally got back on the board in the home run department with a solo shot of his own in the fifth inning. It was his first home run since July 9.
