O's recall Rickard, option Scott

April 28th, 2018

BALTIMORE -- Seeking to get back to a four-man bench, the Orioles recalled Joey Rickard from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday, optioning lefty to Norfolk to clear a roster spot.
Rickard, inserted in the lineup right away, gives the Orioles another right-handed-hitting option as they get ready to head west to Anaheim and Oakland, following Monday's off-day.
"He didn't get off to a great start, I think a lot of it had to do with the cold weather, but he's been real fortunate down there the last couple weeks. Fun to watch," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Rickard, who hit .345/.456/.473 with five doubles and a two-run triple on Friday for Norfolk. "Glad to get him back here and reward him for what he's done."
The 2015 Rule 5 Draft pick will get his first crack at the Majors in '18 after hitting .241 over 111 games last season.
Scott is the odd man out, as the O's don't feel as if they need a second lefty to go with for now. Scott, optioned for the third time since March 22, will head to Norfolk with the aim to get him more back-to-back outings.
Over 4 2/3 innings in three outings, Scott gave up three earned runs and six hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Scott, who was a starter for most of 2017, has tossed six scoreless innings of relief for the Tides this year.
